About this work

A young girl with two long braids sits half-turned in an ornate wooden armchair upholstered in faded tapestry fabric, twisting at the waist to look back over her shoulder at the viewer. Her bare arms and shoulders catch a soft light against the dark, shadowed room behind her, while one hand rests loosely on the chair's arm.

Rendered in pastel, the composition relies on a narrow band of warm light picked out against deep brown and black shadow, giving the face and skin a luminous glow. The carved wood and patterned upholstery are built with looser, textured strokes than the smoothly blended flesh tones. The strong chiaroscuro and quiet, watchful gaze lend the image a hushed, dramatic stillness.
